When the Duchess of Cambridge arrived at the Natural History Museum, few spectators were interested in the historical artifacts. They weren’t even impressed by the gorgeous green Mulberry dress, or the fabulous Jimmy Choo shoes. All eyes were on Kate’s new ‘do – a brand new, face-framing fringe.
RepliKate-ers worldwide flocked to their stylist’s swivel chair, eager to frame their own faces. I was one of these, begging the salon to squeeze me in as soon as they could.
My stylist, Megan, has been cutting my hair for years. She always makes me look and feel like a true princess, often giving life-changing haircuts. It came as no surprise that I would bring this challenge to her and hope for success.
So I went, iPhone in hand, to see my darling stylist. I showed her pictures from Kate’s recent visit to St. Andrew’s and even offered to play a video (to see how the hair moves!) but Megan knew how to get the new Kate look.

I am not blessed with thick, flowing raven locks, but instead have shiny, auburn hair that is fine but plentiful. Because of this, Megan decided to make some minor changes to the look to suit my face shape and hair type. Always ask your stylist to do this! The cut will look different based on these factors. To achieve the look, she said we would do long layers, face-framing angles, and a side-swept fringe/bang that would fall between my lower lash line and the tip of my nose. For me, she softened some angles and added extra layers.
Forty-five minutes and a discussion on shoe shopping later, Megan finished my “Chelsea-style blow dry.” The result was magnificent. I tried to catch my reflection in every shiny surface (mirror, glass window, spoon…) that I passed for the rest of the day. And the reviews were rave – one friend was even kind enough to “mistake” me for Kate.
I love my new Kate-look, and I think the Duchess would approve!

- Bring pictures from the speech at the Natural History Museum, the couple’s trip to Cambridge, or the visit to St. Andrew’s
- Ask for long layers, face-framing angles, and a side-swept fringe that falls between the lash line and tip of the nose
- Make certain your stylist is altering the cut to best suit your hair
- If your stylist isn’t familiar with a “Chelsea-style blow dry,” ask her to add waves or curls to your blow out
- Ask her the best way to blow out this style at home
